About routeplay

routeplay is a bit of fun: a way to find new music on a road trip. Say where you're going, and it makes a playlist of songs by artists from the places you drive through, each timed to play as you pass.

It won't always be right

Everything comes from open data, built by volunteers: MusicBrainz for artists and songs, Wikidata for where people were born, and OpenStreetMap for places. It has gaps and mistakes, so an artist may land in the wrong town, a song may have the wrong year, and some places have no one yet. If you spot one, tell us. Better still, fix it at the source, and everyone gets the fix.

The times are a guide

Songs are timed from Google's estimate of the drive, between town centres, so they drift with traffic, stops and where you really start. routeplay isn't a route planner: find your way with the navigation app you usually use. Always follow the road and the conditions, and drive as they need. Don't use routeplay while you're driving; set it up before you go, or hand the phone to a passenger.

Tell us what's next

routeplay is new. We'd like to hear what you'd add: features you'd like to see, places it gets wrong or misses, and where it should go next.
